Connor Lucas ENG 3080J Hollis February 20, 2014 The Wild West Rides Into The Sunset Have you ever read a text that included items such as a bold cowboy, trusty horse, beautiful female, or a dark villain in a dry, isolated, and undeveloped setting? If so, it’s a great possibility that you were reading a classic Western. Many readers of this genre would describe its stereotypes as what I listed above. You can almost always find that protagonist cowboy hero, who tends to be a good-looking and sharp character that fights the dirty, rugged, evil villain in an epic climax while trying to save his gorgeous and innocent lady. The setting is often a flat, unpopulated, and undeveloped town, surrounded by mountains. In the story, Potter is described as wearing a new black suit that most likely was purchased in San Antonio (23). This gives the reader the idea that the East influence d the West a great deal, considering a hard-nosed, sharp-shooting town hero most likely should not be wearing a new suit that was made in the East. The stereotypical western criminal is mean, dirty, selfish, and constantly stirring up trouble. In â€Å"The Bride,† your criminal is Scratchy Wilson. However, as Kolb describes, the difference between Scratchy and most other Western villains is that Scratchy’s â€Å"main crime seems to be that he cant hold his liquor† (98). The eastern culture is brought up again in the story through Scratchy’s clothes. You’d expect to visualize a rough and dirty character whose soul is as dark as his clothes. With Scratchy, you get a criminal wearing a â€Å"maroon-colored flannel shirt† that was made in New York (24). Crane uses these characters to portray an idea to his reader’s that the influence the East has on the West is far greater than the average person would expect. Underage Drinking And The Central Nervous System - 1446 Words

There are so many people who have drank underage. Norah Piehl quotes, â€Å"According to a 1991 University of Michigan study 81% of students had had at least one alcoholic drink in their lives (13 Piehl).† Wow, that is scary. Imagine, 81 percent of students; that is to many people. What is alcohol anyway? Rob Nagel states, â€Å"Alcohol is a depressant that acts as a numbing agent on the central nervous system.† So drinking alcohol can slow down the central nervous system and can impair a person’s judgement. Another interesting fact from Rob is, â€Å"It is estimated that 75% of alcoholics are male and 25% are female.† Since there are statistics about underage drinking, there must be an origin of underage drinking. There are many purposes for underage†¦show more content†¦Ã¢â‚¬Å"Peer pressure, the social acceptability of drinking, and a desire to escape from emotional stress and anxiety can all set the stage for a person s descent into alcohol addiction.† Peer pressure from others can lead to underage drinking by the desire to fit in with the crowd. An interview was done with Margaret Bezick and she told us, â€Å"If a family member is an alcoholic and they are around their kids, it can lead to underage drinking. It lead to my brother drinking underage and becoming an alcoholic.† Similarly, a phrase from Rob Nagel supports this idea. â€Å"Children with a biological parent who is an alcoholic are more likely to become alcoholics that are children who do not have an alcoholic parent.† Being around an alcoholic as a child will show a young child about the effects of alcohol. They would grow up around that person, and think that drinking underage is the right thing b ecause of witnessing it as an innocent infant. Leanne Currie-McGhee has an interesting fact in her book that says, â€Å"According to the CDC, people aged 12 to 20 drink 11 percent of all alcohol consumed in the United States(pg 21 Currie-McGhee)†. Two Poets Present Their Memories Essay Parliament Hill Fields and I Remember, I Remember are poems involving memories of the poets. They approach nostalgia in different ways, however, therefore producing contrasting results within the poems. In I Remember, I Remember the situation he is in forces the poet into his memories, whereas, in Parliament Hill Fields, the poet is looking back of his own accord. This results in a difference between the moods of the poems, giving I Remember, I Remember a more resentful tone that comes from being forced into his memories by visiting his birthplace. This is ironic, as, the title suggests I Remember-a voluntary act, but the feeling given is that the poet does not want to remember these things. Also, the repetition in the title suggests a certain level of wistfulness that demonstrates yet more irony, as these are definitely not fond memories for the poet. I Remember, I Remember is a bitter poem, depicting the poets unhappy memories of childhood or even his sour feelings towards his memories. These feelings were apparent at the start of the poem as Larkin travels by a different line for once. The use of for once was not a necessary phrase in his description of the journey but insinuates that his childhood was monotonous and dull. There is another phrase, come to that that is also unnecessary to the meaning of the poem or sentence it is in. This gives the impression that it is said angrily as an aside. Larkin uses negatives to emphasise what he did not do and the experiences in life that he was never a part of. By concentrating on these negative memories, he gives a harsh tone to these few verses. The poet also qualifies all these memories. It seems as though he has dreamt about how he could have done things, for instance, he talks of the blinding theologies he did not invent and the splendid family that he never had. These adjectives show that the poet has thought a lot about his regrets and the things he missed out on, perhaps indicating that he has to live with his memories forever and cannot escape them. In Parliament Hill Fields, the poet looks more fondly back upon his earlier life, showing that it was more enjoyable. Betjeman makes his surroundings seem grander than they really were. An example of this is when the train he is watching puffed its sulphur to the sunset where that Land of Laundries stood. By using the image of puffed its sulphur to the sunset, Betjeman uses a commonly known beautiful sight to hide the fact that the train is really emitting poisonous substances. By including the sulphur emissions in this line, Betjeman shows that he accepts that these things werent perfect but that he also appreciates them all the same. By attempting to glorify the image, it is almost as if he is unwilling to acknowledge the reality of it and would rather just remember the ideal. His description of the Land of Laundries introduces a fairy-tale quality and exalts a scene most would see as common or a sign of the working class. The memories of the poet must have been fond as there must have been a reason for him to want to glorify them. Another way in which Betjeman tries to make the images seem grander is in his poetic diction. He alters the syntax on numerous occasions like in Virginia creeper drown and train and tram alternate go. With Betjeman, he pities the lives of others, but Larkin demonstrates self-pity in his poem. The pity in Parliament Hill Fields is shown in the lines  And my childish wave of pity, seeing children carrying down  Sheaves of drooping dandelions to the courts of Kentish Town.  There is ambiguity in the real meaning of these lines. It is possible that he pities himself here, although, by following the statement about pity with references to the children, it isnt that likely. It could be that it is a simple case of him pitying the children for how hard their lives are, or for how meagre thei r existence in comparison to his life up the hill and away from poverty. He might pity the children for being so as to take drooping dandelions (worthless weeds) to their mothers, thinking they will be pleased at this. In connection with this, he could pity the children for holding their mothers in such high regard worshipping them like royalty (courts). It may be that Betjeman pities the fact that they are children and he has escaped childhood, or he could be, on the other hand, pitying them for what is still to come in adulthood as Betjeman wishes he were enjoying his childhood again. This last point reflects the theme of memories in the poem. It is interesting that he chooses to use the word childish rather than child-like, as this would suggest that he is being derogatory about his own emotions. It is unclear as to why Betjeman thinks his pity is childish. It could be due to the wave, as the use of the word wave suggests that these feelings didnt last for very long. The pity shown in I Remember, I Remember is self-pity. The poet emphasises the bad memories he has so as to show what a hard time he had, whereas Betjeman does not dwell on the negative things and, therefore, seems more cheerful. Larkin pities himself for the fact that his doggerel was not set up in blunt ten-point. The word not suggests self-pity as, once again, he concentrates only on the negatives and things that didnt happen and this shows that he feels sorry for himself. By referring to his poetry as doggerel, he is putting himself down and indicates that he is perhaps fishing for compliments. Blunt ten-point is referring to iambic pentameter, so the poet is saying here how he does not conform to the accepted poetry. This echoes how he did not conform in his childhood either and therefore did not fit in. By including this fact, he is also showing self-pity, as it is as though he wants the readers of the poem to feel sorry for him.  The endings of the two poems are also contrasting. I found Parliament Hill Fields to have a reflective ending, leaving the reader feeling as though the poet is lost in his memories and his train of thought has just petered out naturally. This leaves the reader feeling contented. I Remember, I Remember seems to end quite flippantly with Oh well, I suppose its not the places fault. By saying Oh well, Larkin seems to be dismissive. It seems odd to me that, after writing of how he resents his past, he can just forget it so quickly. It could be that he is being philosophical and does not want to dwell on the things that are in the past. The poet could also feel that as it is in the past, there is nothing that can be done about it now. Air and Water Pollution essay Paper The chemical composition of the atmosphere today is so different as compared to the atmosphere that existed before the Industrial Revolution, 1760 1830. To define air pollution, we should first consider all those sources that release harmful chemicals into the atmosphere and alter its chemical composition. First of all, all anthropogenic (man-made) emissions are air pollutants. Next, is the natural emission which can be divided into boogieing and genetic. Boogieing emissions result from the living world such as volatile organic compound emissions from forests and CHI emissions from swamp. On the other hand, genetic emissions are from the non-living world, such as volcanic emissions, sea-salt emissions, and natural fires. So, keeping all these sources in mind, air pollutant can be defined as any substance that is released into the air from anthropogenic, boogieing and genetic sources, which is maybe not a component of the natural atmosphere or which is present in higher concentrations than it is present naturally in the atmosphere, and may impose harmful effects either in short or long terms. Truman developed the proper policies to handle various domestic issues , such as the control over prices, housing problems, the control over nuclear weapons, etc. Actually, Truman managed to change the U.S. strategy toward the expansion of the Soviet ideology through the use of atomic blackmail and his decision to confront Stalinism. Nixon made a decision to change foreign policy reestablishing social relations with PRC. He said, â€Å"Here in America, we are fortunate that most of our people have not only the blessings of liberty but also the means to live full and good and, by the worlds standards, even abundant lives† (Nixon, 1974). These approaches affected foreign policy in different ways. The presidents began to exercise greater level of control over foreign policy. He also acknowledges efforts of American Revolutionaries in their quest to fight for their freedom against the legal bondage under British rule. He considers anti-slavery a just, reasonable and patriotic stance for future generations to come, and not a politically affiliated cause. In the speech, signers of the Declaration of Independence are praised for their patriotic efforts to put a country’s interests above their own. However, Douglass advices and urges listeners to strive to continue the work of these great revolutionaries who brought with them democracy and freedom to their great land. On the other hand, Douglass shuns American black slavery, and condemns the pretense of Americans for being untrue to the principles, both past and present, of the founders. He retorts by saying that some people find favor in imposing slavery to others yet they cannot be in a position to be slaves themselves. Douglass considers this as a non-divine, inhumane act, which is cruel in God’s eyes. In addition, he also shuns the America ministers and churches for remaining silent and acquiescing towards existence of slavery. He notes that the church in this case is superlatively guilty in its right sense. In conclusion, Douglass is optimistic that pro-slavery forces will be eventually concurred by anti-slavery sentiments. He stresses the arrival of freedom, and the abolitionists promise to fight slavery, whatever the
